Shops

Alhama de Granada cheeseSupermarkets: Most of the shops have the same opening hours: 9.30-14.30 & 17.30-21.30 Monday to Friday, on Saturday they don't open for the second evening session and are closed all day Sunday.

The nearest is lovely little supermarket just 2 minutes away on Calle de 4 Esquinas, head down the hill, first left, across the square at the bottom and follow your nose.

There is another on the parade of shops on Carretera de Loja, slightly bigger. There is a 'Dia' which is bigger still and opens for that extra Saturday evening session. That is just off the lower square at the top end of Calle Barranco Aserradero.

Butchers:

Alhama de Granada fishFishmongers: There are 2 wet fish shops that I have seen one is near top side of Plaza Constitution, the other as you head out of Constitution on Call de la Alameda, past the tobacconist. Even though Alhama is an hour from the sea the fish is fresh daily - it is brought up from the coast the day it is caught in an age old tradition.

Bakers: There is a small bakery - head down Tejar Bajo, it becomes Calle de Agua, when you reach the bottom turn right it is just there next to the barbers shop. You can also get bread from Café la Créme in Plaza Constitution - this is open on Sundays when the bakers is closed. I think the baker uses a traditional wood burning stove, I have seen piles of olive wood outside the premises. Either way it tastes great.

There is a bread van which does the rounds - I'm not sure of the timings but you can certainly hear him shouting and honking his horn in the morning.

Banks: There are four / five banks (all with cash machines) dotted around the town. A few are on the parade of shops on Carretera de Loja and one on the top corner of Calle de Fuerte.

Post Office: is on Carretera de Velez Malaga just climb the steps at the side of Carretera de Loja by the parade of shops.

Petrol Station: On the lower square (Plaza del Duque de Mandas) at the top end of Carretera de Granada. Also sells bottled gas.

Market: Every Friday morning until early afternoon below the Arabic Quarter near the library. A few good fruit and vegetable stalls, some hardware and linen etc, not an arts and crafts kind of place - but worth a visit. Just head down the hill through the lower Square and follow your nose to the right - near Calle del Carril Bajo.
